When an audience sees a performance, they are unaware of all that happens behind the scenes to create the magic onstage. Theatre is a collaboration between those onstage and offstage. This class will focus on those behind the scenes who produce the magic. Students will learn the parts of the theatre, the various backstage and booth roles, and will use active learning in small groups and directed solo projects. Primarily, students will deal with construction big and small, collaborate with the director to ensure their vision comes to life, and build sets and props for CSDC’s productions. In addition, they will be introduced to lighting, sound, and special effects. They will be supervised by the teacher and other mentors. Students will be expected to work on CSDC’s productions unless they are performing in them. Students will be assigned technical positions, such as stage manager, backstage manager, light board operator, spot operator, sound board operator, props manager, backstage crew etc., for the productions they choose to work.

PLEASE NOTE: Extra rehearsal days outside of scheduled class times will be required, which may include Saturdays and/or weeknights. Students must be available for all crew rehearsals for the shows they have chosen to work unless other arrangements have been made. A calendar of rehearsals and performances for the shows will be sent out by early fall.
